Yes, it’s bad out there. Every time you turn on the TV someone is talking about more financial layoffs, and it’s easy to start to think the sky is falling.

Yet despite the doom and gloom, many people are viewing the financial layoffs as an opportunity to hit the reset button on their lifestyles, and finally explore opportunities they had been putting off for far too long.

So in addition to finding your next high paying gig, here are two other approaches to finding a highly rewarding lifestyle during all the financial layoffs:

1) Start an Online Business (even without an idea for one)

For most of us, replacing our primary income stream after a layoff is the number one concern. But don’t be so quick to jump back into the 9-5, answering to someone else. Why not consider starting an online business of your own?

Most people believe that the only way to make money online is to have a million dollar idea, and the programming skills to pull it off. The reality however, is that most people making $1,000′s / day on the Internet are actually doing so without their own products or services, without any start-up capital, and without any specialized technical knowledge at all.

The technique is called “affiliate marketing” and it works like this: thousands of completely legitimate companies (think Amazon, Microsoft, Apple) will actually pay you to promote their products online. (Do a search for any company + “affiliate” and you’ll see what I mean.) Tens of thousands of people are replacing their day job income from this technique alone, just by learning techniques for driving traffic to these companies using Google, Yahoo and MSN.

The best way to learn how to make money online is to avoid expensive courses and e-books, and spend more time in online communities, where other affiliate marketers are sharing their experiences and mentoring newbies. The best community I’ve found is called Wealthy Affiliate University, as it literally gives you all the tools, resources, and most importantly: 1 on 1 mentoring that you’ll need to make an extremely good living online. As of the time of writing, it only costs $40 / mth, and is worth every penny, so check it out and see if it’s for you.

2) Take a Mini-Retirement

Ready for an idea that’s really out there? Sit the recession out, and retire for a year.

Sound crazy? It’s really not. Most people think of traveling as their vacation time, and therefore a cost that needs to be saved for. A mini-retirement is more like a sabbatical, where you pick up skills, experiences, and even a little money while you’re away before re-entering the workforce – often more valuable than when you left.

This concept was popularized in a book called “The 4 Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferris. In it, he talks about specific, step-by-step approaches to how he dealt with his version of the financial layoffs, and saved over $30,000 while he traveled all over the world, picking up valuable skills he was able to apply to the workforce upon his return. Often times these would be volunteer organizations that would cover his living expenses, so his costs were low, and the work he was doing was so valuable, it was easy to spin why he had a gap in his resume upon his return.

The message is simple: don’t panic – financial layoffs can be a good thing if you use the time wisely.

In summary:

These are just two ways that people are taking advantage of all the financial layoffs, but there are many others. Yes, this recession is real and this economy stinks, but with a little perspective and an open mind, it really is possible to view an financial layoffs as an opportunity to create the kind of lifestyle you deserve – on your own terms.
